Certification and audit¶
CO2IN credits are certified against ISO 14064-2:2019 by TÜV NORD Czech, and the coverage behind them is audited annually.
Is CO2IN certified?¶
Yes. CO2IN is certified as a greenhouse gas reduction project under ISO 14064-2:2019 by TÜV NORD Czech, first in June 2023.
Validation is not one-off. It is repeated against ISO 14064-3:2019, most recently in August 2026, and the certification is what allows corporate customers to use CO2IN in non-financial reporting.
What exactly is certified?¶
The project itself: withdrawing EU ETS allowances from circulation, and the emission reduction that produces.
That covers how allowances are bought and held, how credits are issued against them, how coverage is maintained, and how it is all recorded. It is the mechanism that is certified — not a claim about a forest somewhere.
Who checks that the allowances really exist?¶
Two independent layers, on top of CO2IN's own daily checks.
Validation — TÜV NORD Czech validates the greenhouse gas reduction report against ISO 14064-3:2019.
Audit — the number of credits issued against allowances held is audited annually, by ZH Bohemia.
Internally, coverage is reconciled at least weekly — and more often when the market is active — by the heads of regulation, trading and back office independently. Every transaction is recorded on an unalterable ledger, so the totals can be compared against the official emission allowance registry at any time.
Can I get a certificate for emissions I have offset?¶
Yes. Retiring CO2IN credits — permanently withdrawing them from circulation — produces a Carbon Credit Certificate recording the tonnes of CO2e withdrawn.
The certificate states the number of credits retired, the tonnage that represents, the certification standard, and the validating and auditing bodies. It is issued by The CO2IN, a.s..
If you need a certificate for corporate reporting, contact info@co2in.com — the retirement process for companies is handled directly rather than in the app.
Does certification mean CO2IN is regulated as a financial product?¶
No. The certification is an environmental one: it attests to the greenhouse gas reduction, not to financial regulation of the credit.
Is CO2IN supervised by a financial regulator?¶
No registration is required for what CO2IN does.
CO2IN put its business to the Czech National Bank as a formal regulatory enquiry, describing the product in full, and the CNB's position was that it does not require registration with them.
Is CO2IN covered by MiCA?¶
No. The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation applies to crypto-assets, and CO2IN credits are not one.
MiCA defines a crypto-asset as a digital representation of value or rights transferred and stored using distributed ledger technology, and defines a distributed ledger as a record shared and synchronised between a set of network nodes that reach agreement, between themselves, on whether a transaction is valid.
CO2IN's record is not that. It is kept by CO2IN, and a transaction is recorded because CO2IN records it — not because independent nodes vote on it. Without that, there is no crypto-asset for MiCA to regulate.
This is also why CO2IN is not a cryptocurrency: the ledger provides an unalterable audit trail, not a decentralised one.
